Thai Giant Kuhli Loach Care
Thai Giant Kuhli Loaches are relatively easy to care for when provided with clean, stable water and plenty of hiding places. They are naturally shy and become more confident when kept with several of their own kind.
A soft substrate is especially important because Kuhli Loaches spend a lot of time searching through the bottom of the aquarium. Sand or smooth fine gravel works well.
Provide driftwood, rocks, caves, aquarium plants, and other decorations where they can hide during the day and explore at night.
Recommended Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72–82°F
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: Keep low with regular water changes
Feeding Thai Giant Kuhli Loaches
Kuhli Loaches are omnivorous bottom feeders and should receive sinking foods that reach the substrate.
Recommended foods include:
- Sinking wafers
- Sinking pellets
- Repashy-style foods
- Frozen bloodworms
- Frozen brine shrimp
- Daphnia
- Other small frozen or live foods
Feed after the aquarium lights go off when possible, as Kuhli Loaches are often more active during the evening and nighttime.
Aquarium Setup
A natural, planted aquarium is ideal for Thai Giant Kuhli Loaches. Use a soft substrate and provide plenty of cover.
Recommended aquarium features include:
- Fine sand or smooth substrate
- Driftwood
- Rock caves
- Aquarium plants
- Java moss
- Leaf litter
- Shaded areas
- Gentle water flow
Make sure decorations do not have sharp edges that could injure their delicate bodies.
Thai Giant Kuhli Loach Tank Mates
Thai Giant Kuhli Loaches are peaceful and work well in community aquariums with other peaceful freshwater fish.
Compatible tank mates can include:
- Tetras
- Rasboras
- Danios
- Gouramis
- Peaceful livebearers
- Corydoras
- Other Kuhli Loaches
- Small peaceful freshwater fish
- Shrimp and snails
Avoid aggressive or highly territorial fish that may compete with or harass these peaceful bottom dwellers.
Keep Kuhli Loaches in Groups
Although a single Kuhli Loach can survive, they are much more comfortable and active when kept with others. A group of 5 or more is recommended when aquarium size allows.
Keeping a group encourages more natural behavior and gives these normally shy fish greater confidence to explore the aquarium.
